Fracture-filled diamonds are diamonds that have been treated to improve their appearance by filling surface-reaching fractures with a substance, usually a type of glass.
Here’s a fun fact:
When subjected to heat, the filler material can “leak out” or become damaged.
This means if a fracture-filled diamond is accidentally exposed to the high heat of a jeweler’s torch (like during a ring resizing), the filler can melt or deteriorate, leading to a drastic change in the appearance of the diamond.
Because of this, it’s crucial to let any jeweler know if a diamond has been fracture-filled before they perform any work on it. The filler can also be affected by certain acids and other chemicals.
A Better Understanding of Fracture-Filled Diamonds from our GIA Gemologist: Vrunalee
“In the world of diamonds, there’s a process called fracture filling, Fracture filling treatment includes injecting, a molten glass filler into diamonds, surfers reaching inclusions the filler has a Refractive index close to the diamonds Refractive index, which makes the inclusion of the fracture less visible, hence enhances its clarity and color.
For example, makes it from VS2 to VVS1 clarity easily. It involves injecting a glass filler into diamonds to hide imperfections. This treatment isn’t permanent and can be risky if the filler is damaged. It is important to remember that this treatment is not permanent. The glass filler can be sensitive, especially when it comes to high-impact situations.
Today, a client brought in her 2-carat diamond it has a greenish-blue color and clouds all over. It happened to be fracture-filled for added beauty, but an accident changed its color and clarity for the worse. Thankfully, she had the diamond insured by Jeweler’s Mutual, ensuring a replacement.
This story emphasizes the importance of Natural Certified Diamonds and a Gemologist Appraisal. Always consult a gemologist, get an appraisal, and a certified diamond report to safeguard your investment. It’s the smart way to protect your diamond’s long-term value.”
Fracture Fill treatment serves as a reminder of the complexities of diamond enhancements and the importance of being informed about any treatments a gemstone might have undergone.
